David Moyes dampens Flynn Downes hype and brings new West Ham signing back down to earth with reality check.
The 23-year-old joined West Ham from Swansea City for around £12 million in the summer transfer window (Sky Sports).
He has hardly played in the Premier League, but has featured regularly in the Europa Conference League.
And Downes has made a big impression for West Ham in those games.
The ex-Swansea ace was absolutely superb for the Hammers against Anderlecht on Thursday night. He ran the game for us from the middle of the park.
Downes looks like a real player. He has absolutely everything needed to succeed at the very highest level of the game.
Moyes has issued a word of caution regarding Downes though…

The West Ham boss was speaking to reporters yesterday and offered high words of praise for Flynn Downes.
At the same time though, Moyes told reporters how the 23-year-old still has a long way to go, as quoted by Football.London:
Going exactly the way you want it. He started slow and I said this because for reference, I had the likes of Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka who I took both from Championship teams, none of them probably got in the team for six months and they both went on to win I don’t know how many caps for England. It takes time. The manager is seeing it and doing the right thing and my experience will tell me. Flynn has done very well in the two games. Bits of last night, very good, bits of it, he has to do better. He needs to start expanding his game as a midfield player, but he’s got a lot of good things going for him. I’ll bring him on at the right speed, but I’ve been pleased with what he’s been doing.
Now, Moyes is right, he does have plenty of experience managing numerous different kinds of players throughout the years.
So of course, we have to trust the West Ham manager in this regard.
I have to say though, Downes really has looked exceptional in his last two outings for the Hammers.
The 23-year-old looks the the part and I really think that he’ll go on to become a star for us.
Moyes has dampened the Downes hype and brought the West Ham ace back down to earth with a harsh reality check. So the challenge for the midfielder now is very much to make it impossible for Moyes to leave him out of the side.
