Recent Flynn Downes emergence means £15 million West Ham man could almost be made redundant

The time has come for Flynn Downes to get a consistent run in the West Ham team ahead of Tomas Soucek, in my opinion.

Flynn Downes joined West Ham from Swansea City for around £12 million in the summer transfer window (Sky Sports).

The 23-year-old has made a slow start to life at the London Stadium, with David Moyes choosing not to give him too many minutes so far.

Downes has been brilliant in the Europa Conference League though, and his performance against Anderlecht on Thursday night was very impressive indeed.

The Brentwood-born midfielder is miles better than Tomas Soucek when in possession.

And if there is any substance to Moyes’s claims that he wants his West Ham team to become more of a possession based one, then Downes surely must be integrated into the Scot’s side ahead of the Czech Republic international…

Flynn Downes needs to start regularly for West Ham

The 23-year-old has proven that he is more than ready to be playing regular football now for the Hammers.

He provides West Ham with something that Soucek just doesn’t offer us in the middle of the park.

Signed for £15 million from Slavia Prague in 2020 (Daily Mail), Soucek has regressed badly over the past year or so.

And Downes is on another level to the Czech midfielder, especially when it comes to technical ability.

He keeps us ticking and moves the ball around with ease.

The Brentwood-born Hammer gets stuck in, is tenacious in the tackle and provides a solid shield for our backline. He has plenty of energy as well – a prerequisite for anyone who plays for David Moyes.

Downes absolutely should start for West Ham against Anderlecht on Thursday night and I think that he should against Southampton next weekend as well.

The midfielder is obviously still getting used to his new surroundings. His performances in the games that he has played has proven to me that he’s more than ready to make a big difference for West Ham this season though.

The ex-Swansea ace will undoubtedly go on to be a big hit at the London Stadium, if he continues to work hard of course.

And I think that Flynn Downes has to be starting regularly now for West Ham ahead of Tomas Soucek.
