David Moyes comments on Brazil tell us exactly why he has a problem with West Ham United ace Said Benrahma.

Brazil have lit up the World Cup out in Qatar, putting in a series of easy-on-the-eye performances on their way to the quarter-finals.

Next up for the Samba Boys is a clash with Croatia. Tite and co will be confident of securing a semi-final clash with either Argentina or The Netherlands.

Every single neutral fan loves watching the Brazilians play. Their flair, panache and penchant for putting smiles on the fans’ faces has left an indelible mark on the beautiful game.

Not everyone has been blown away by Brazil’s wonderfully expansive and exciting attacking football though. And unfortunately for us, one of those people is our manager…

The Scot has been working for The Times, writing columns during the World Cup.

Brazil – watching them beat South Korea, I loved the flair, the attacking play and especially loved Lucas Paquetá’s goal, but I look at Brazil and think they could be anything at any time. They can reach levels of performance that are probably better than any other team’s, yet flaws mean they won’t always be the best side. I see looseness in them, periods in the game when they say “maybe we only need to defend with five or six players here”. They have such riches in the forward areas, players with flair, attacking intent and remarkable speed, like Vinícius Junior, Richarlison, Raphinha and Neymar, but my question is: if they get put under severe defensive pressure, will they be able to see it through?

Moyes then went on to suggest that Brazil may set up more defensively in the later rounds of the World Cup:

If Brazil play England, or France, or Portugal they will have moments where they have to defend and suffer. It might be that they have to tweak their approach. They have the manager to do it – Tite is a top coach, with great experience – and perhaps he will bring in Fred and other more defensively minded players to give them more solidity in the difficult games. They have an incredible spirit in their squad and that can also help them when it gets tough.

Those comments form Moyes really do help us understand why he has such a problem with Benrahma – West Ham’s most creative and skilful player.

He clearly isn’t a fan of players expressing themselves to the determinant of a rigid defensive setup.

They also offer us an insight into the reasons why he is such a defensive, pragmatic coach.

The Scot is always about keeping a clean sheet first and then giving his players the freedom to go and try to win the game in the last 10 minutes of the game – Michail Antonio said as much.

The David Moyes comments on Brazil unfortunately tell us all we need to know about what he thinks of Said Benrahma. I really wouldn’t be surprised if the Algerian left the London Stadium sooner rather than later, for the good of his own career.
