A Craig Dawson new contract claim has been made by West Ham insiders, with an unfortunate outcome expected.

It seemed as though West Ham would have to dip into the market for another centre-back on deadline day in the summer, with Wolves apparently set to sign Dawson for around £5 million.

The 32-year-old centre-back ended up staying at West Ham though. And thank God he did!

Dawson has been absolutely sensational for the Hammers since returning to David Moyes’s starting XI.

It could be argued that the ex-Watford man is actually West Ham’s best defender, and there would certainly be plenty of merit to that argument.

In an ideal world, Moyes would keep Dawson at the London Stadium for another few years.

The fact that he wants to move closer to his family in the north of England will clearly work against us though. And a concerning claim has been made about the 32-year-old’s future by a high-level Hammers insider…

According to Hammers insiders Claret and Hugh, the club plan to offer Dawson a new contract in January.

Unfortunately though, the 32-year-old centre-back is expected to reject that offer and leave West Ham on a free transfer in the summer of 2023.

That would obviously be a really big blow for the Hammers.

We are well covered in central defence, but Dawson’s influence both on and off the pitch cannot be underestimated.

Many fans and so-called pundits view Dawson as an old-school, no nonsense defender, and in some ways, that’s exactly what he is.

The truth though, is that the 32-year-old has so much more about him than that.

He originally joined the Hammers on a season-long loan from Watford in October 2020. West Ham then made his move to the London Stadium a permanent one for a further £3 million in the summer of 2021 (The Sun).

Daws has established himself as a cult hero at West Ham but he’s actually a lot more than that. He’s a very good good defender, and labelling him as a cult hero really doesn’t do him justice.

The 32-year-old is one of the best passers amongst the West Ham centre-backs now having worked really hard to improve that aspect of his game, and he deserves huge credit for that.

Dawson has proven that you shouldn’t ever judge a book by its cover.

He has been absolutely superb for the Hammers for the past two years.

Let’s just hope that Craig Dawson accepts a new contract offer from West Ham, if one is indeed made to him in January.
