West Ham could be set to replace Nayef Aguerd with a 26-year-old defender who’s just won two league titles in a row.

Nayef Aguerd is being heavily linked with the West Ham exit door in the January transfer window, with the likes of Lyon lining up a move to sign him.

Hammers boss David Moyes is short enough as it is in the central defensive department, so losing the Moroccan would not be ideal, unless he has a ready made replacement lined up of course.

It appears as though that is exactly the case.

West Ham are now keen to sign Cameron Carter-Vickers this month according to a report from Daily Record, with Aguerd being linked with an exit.

The Celtic defender has been with the Glasgow giants for two-and-a-half years now, and has two league titles to his name. Now he could be set for a move from the East End of Glasgow to East London…

West Ham want 26-yo centre-back to replace Nayef Aguerd

Carter-Vickers, a former Tottenham player, has been a real hit with Celtic, and now Moyes apparently wants him at West Ham.

I have to say, I’m not overly excited by this, and I feel as though Moyes should be setting the bar a lot higher than signing someone from the Scottish league.

That said, he is a very competent footballer, and as an addition to bolster our squad, I don’t think he’d be a bad signing, if he’s available for a reasonable fee of course.

In 13 Scottish Premiership games for Celtic this season, Carter-Vickers has averaged 0.8 tackles, 0.6 interceptions and three clearances per game. He has also won four aerial duels per match – a stat that proves his superb leap more than makes up for the fact that he’s on the short side for a centre-back at just 6ft 1in tall (Who Scored).

The 16-capped USA international is incredibly comfortable with the ball at his feet, and has made 93.3 passes on average per match for Celtic this season, with a hugely impressive completion rate of 92.1% (Who Scored).

We all know that the Premier League is a huge step up in quality and intensity from the Scottish Premiership though.

If West Ham are to sell Nayef Aguerd in January, I would expect Moyes to bring in a truly top-class defender to replace him. However, I’m just not quite sure that Carter-Vickers is the kind of top-drawer centre-back we need.
