West Ham sell-on clause intrigue as Sebastien Haller agrees £30m move to Borussia Dortmund

West Ham United sell-on clause intrigue as Sebastien Haller agrees £30m move to Borussia Dortmund from Ajax.

When David Moyes gave the green light for West Ham to take a £25m loss in selling Haller to Ajax 18 months ago it raised a few eyebrows.

The Hammers had reportedly jumped a queue that included the likes of Man United to sign Haller from Eintracht Frankfurt for a club record £45m just 18 months earlier.

Manuel Pellegrini was the West Ham manager then. But when Moyes returned to east London for a second spell, Haller’s face simply did not fit.

Moyes preferred the all action Michail Antonio up front ahead of Haller.

And the West Ham boss also publicly criticised Haller on several occasions saying he had to do more for the team and show more.

That decision has been questioned on an almost weekly basis since as Haller has amassed an astonishing 58 goals and assists for the Dutch giants in 54 games.

West Ham have not done too badly without him of course.

But Haller’s exploits have caught the attention of a host of clubs including Borussia Dortmund back in Germany – now managed by former West Ham assistant coach Edin Terzic.

According to a host of reports on Sunday, Ajax look set to turn a £10m profit on Haller after just 18 months in Amsterdam by selling him to Dortmund, who are looking to beef up their attack having sold Erling Haaland.

RMC Sport claim only the finishing touches remain before the transfer is complete.

“The 27-year-old has already reached an agreement with the Bundesliga side over personal terms, and is now set to make his return to Germany after a previous two-year spell with Eintracht Frankfurt from 2017 to 2019…” RMC Sport reports – as transcribed by Hammers News.

“The transfer fee is expected to be above the £25-30m mark, as the former French youth international presumably arrives to help replace Erling Haaland after the Norwegian’s move to Manchester City.”

Now there is serious West Ham sell-on clause intrigue as Haller agrees the £30m move to Borussia Dortmund.

When Haller was banging the goals in for Ajax many West Ham fans wondered whether the Hammers had included a clause based on the number of times the striker scored for the Dutch giants.

But The Athletic journalist David Ornstein provided clarification on that situation saying unfortunately for West Ham no such clause was included in the deal.

Now Haller looks set to move on to Dortmund and make Ajax a profit, there is understandable intrigue over whether West Ham had the foresight to include a sell-on clause.

West Ham’s official statement announcing Haller’s departure gave no indication at the time.

But Hammers website West Ham Fans.Org claimed last year that the club had demanded a big sell-on fee of between 20-25 per cent.

Whether the report from West Ham Fans.Org is accurate we cannot be sure.

But if that is the case then West Ham would stand to make between £6-7.5m from Haller’s move to Dortmund.

If West Ham have not included a sell-on clause then it will prove to be a big clanger.
