West Ham owners left with egg on their faces as £50m striker transfer claim emerges

West Ham missed out on making a huge splash in the transfer market in January after leaving it too late to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez.

Hammers boss David Moyes was desperate to bring a top-class striker to the London Stadium during the January window.

One of the Scot’s main targets was Benfica hitman Darwin Nunez according to the likes of (90 min and Sky Sports).

We obviously failed to get a deal done for the Uruguayan though. And that was a real shame. The 22-year-old forward could have taken West Ham to another level.

And now the Hammers will undoubtedly have our work cut-out if we are to sign Nunez in the summer transfer window.

The South American has scored 25 goals in 30 appearances for Benfica this season with 20 of those coming in 20 league outings (Transfermarkt).

So he will undoubtedly be a man in high demand at the end of this season.

West Ham owners left with egg on their faces after failed striker transfer

It seems as though the Hammers only needed to offer £8 million more in order to get a deal done for Darwin Nunez on deadline day.

West Ham allegedly made a €50 million (£42 million) bid to sign the 22-year-old. Benfica were holding out for €60 million (£50 million), however.

That’s according to a report from Portuguese media outlet The Record (print edition March 1st, page 14).

David Sullivan, Daniel Kretinsky and David Gold cannot continue to claim that they backed David Moyes to bring in the players that he wanted if Record are to be believed.

£50 million for Nunez would have been a more than fair price to pay.

He has an elite goalscoring record this season and he seems to be tailor made for the Premier League.

The Uruguayan’s playing style is quintessentially South American. He is a tenacious presser, plays with real physicality and has real technical ability. The 22-year-old would be ideally suited for the Premier League what with its intense and robust nature.

His form since the January transfer window closed will have undoubtedly piqued the interest of some of England’s biggest and richest clubs.

The Hammers owners really should have made a more genuine attempt to sign Nunez. £42 million was never going to get it done, especially considering the fact that his release clause is believed to be around £100 million (The Sun).

This has all the makings of yet another striker we will miss out on because of a lack of real and genuine ambition from GSB.

Hopefully they prove us wrong in the summer and bring Nunez to the London Stadium. We won’t be holding our breath though.
