West Ham are interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach ace Denis Zakaria in January according to Sky Sports Italia journalist Angelo Mangiante.

West Ham manager David Moyes is expected to be a busy man in the transfer market next month.

The Scot’s priorities will be to sign a top-class centre-forward and an experienced, high quality centre-back.

In spite of that, the Hammers boss may well be keen to bolster other areas of his squad as well.

West Ham eyeing up January swoop for Denis Zakaria

Sky Sports Italia journalist Angelo Mangiante reckons that the 25-year-old Swiss ace is on the Hammers’ radar.

Everton and Liverpool are allegedly keen on signing Zakaria as well.

The Monchengladbach ace is a defensive midfielder by trade but crucially as far as West Ham are concerned, he can play in the centre-back position as as well.

In 12 Bundesliga outings this season, the Switzerland international has bagged two goals and one assist. During those appearances he has averaged 1.8 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, one clearance and 1.7 dribbles per match. The 25-year-old has made 50.3 passes on average per game and has recorded a completion rate of 89.3% (Who Scored).

Zakaria is incredibly dynamic and energetic. He is a tenacious tackler and has the kind of physicality needed to succeed in the Premier League.

Former BSC Young Boys coach Uli Forte told Mondo Napoli in July 2021:

“He is an incredible box-to-box [player]. He has exceptional technique and grinds kilometres. All his characteristics were appreciated from a very young age, and he made his debut at the age of 18. He has offers from England, he has the right characteristics for the Premier. He will become a devastating player. Zakaria is a champion and has characteristics more or less similar to [Napoli midfielder Diego] Demme. Quantity, but a lot of quality.”

The powerful midfielder is said to be available for around €27 million (£23 million) according to El Nacional.

That seems like decent value for a player with Zakaria’s undoubted quality.

It must be said though…West Ham boss David Moyes should be prioritising strengthening other areas of his squad.

If the board back him to sign a midfielder as well as a striker and central defender then by all means, Zakaria would be a great addition.

If, however, Moyes doesn’t have a lavish budget as is expected to be the case, then signing the Gladbach ace should be very low down on the Scot’s agenda next month.
