Hammers boss David Moyes desperately needs to bolster his central defensive ranks at the London Stadium, having sold Crag Dawson to Wolves in January.

West Ham hold all the cards in race to sign Harry Maguire after fresh Fabrizio Romano claim

Fabrizio Romano wrote in his CaughtOffside substack column that the Hammers are in no rush to sign the England international, and are instead prepared to wait until he end of the summer transfer window in the hope that Man United will lower their demands for the defender.

Described by Paul Merson as ‘outstanding’ (Sky Sports), Maguire is one of the very best centre-backs around when he is playing as part of a system that suits him – either a deep back-line or as part of three centre-backs.

I think that the 30-year-old defender would be a superb addition for the Hammers, contrary to what many of our fans would have you believe.

He has been an absolute man mountain when playing for England over the past few years but has been the target of heavy criticism for some of his displays for Man United.

The thing is, he is far better suited to playing in a side that sets up with a deep backline – just like Leicester did before he moved to Old Trafford.

It’s why I think he’d be perfectly suited to the Hammers. He’s incredibly strong in the air and is a real leader.

I actually think that Harry Maguire would take West Ham to another level defensively and he’d be a huge threat for us from set-pieces as well.

£35 million is obviously too much for the Hammers to pay for Maguire though, and it remains to be seen whether Man United will lower their demands for him.
