West Ham United have agreed a deal to sign one of the most talented young central defenders in the world it seems.
David Moyes is clearly keen to bolster his central defensive ranks at West Ham over the course of the next two transfer windows, with Angelo Ogbonna set to turn 36 before the end of the season.
FC Zenit Saint Petersburg centre-back Robert Renan has been linked with a move to the Hammers, and a recent report from UOL suggested that a deal had already been struck, although his agent suggested that those claims were nothing more than pure lies.
West Ham have some problems in central defence right now, with Nayef Aguerd looking extremely error prone, Kurt Zouma struggling with his fitness and Konstantinos Mavropanos still not quite settled into the team.
Someone like Robert Renan would be a really exciting addition for us, so his agent’s recent comments were somewhat of a blow.
Fear not though Hammers fans, there is some very good news coming out of Brazil about the Zenit star’s future…
West Ham have agreed deal to sign defender
JB Filho claim that the Hammers have in fact agreed a £21 million deal to sign Renan, but he won’t move to the London Stadium until the summer of 2024.
That’s fine, we can wait until then. He’s a really top-class young central defender, and he has all of the attributes needed to succeed in the Premier League.
Renan has only played four league games for Zenit this season, but during those appearances he has averaged 1.5 tackles, 1.5 interceptions and 2.3 clearances per match (Who Scored).
The Brazilian has made 68.8 passes per game and has recorded a completion rate of 89.8% (Who Scored).
Renan would be the ideal long-term Ogbonna replacement. Crucially, he’s left footed as well, and can operate as a left-back if need be.
If West Ham have agreed a deal to sign the 20-year-old, we will be on the verge of bringing a really exciting young player to the club.
And all that remains now is whether Renan’s agent is telling the truth, or if in fact it is JB Filho who have the inside track on West Ham’s proposed deal for the 20-year-old.
