West Ham have been handed fresh hope in their pursuit of Jacob Ramsey following a major twist at Aston Villa.

West Ham and Aston Villa have both had seriously underwhelming summer transfer windows thus far.

Graham Potter and Unai Emery have been restricted to very few signings between them despite both the Hammers and Villa in need of an injection of new blood.

With the new Premier League season now just two weeks away and the window closing in four weeks, time is running out.

PSR has been a big reason for West Ham and Aston Villa being restricted in the transfer market.

But a late flurry is expected at the London Stadium and Villa Park if the clubs are to meet their goals for the new season.

Hammers make Villa star Ramsey their prime target

West Ham have made Aston Villa star Jacob Ramsey their prime midfield target.

The Hammers were guarded when asked about a move for Villa’s Ramsey earlier this week.

It is claimed Ramsey is seen as the perfect replacement for Mohammed Kudus in east London.

Villa were willing to sell Ramsey to West Ham when it looked like Emery would have to sell a key star by the end of June to raise £40m in order to comply with PSR.

Instead the Midlands club sold their women’s team, a loophole exploited by the likes of Chelsea too.

Aston Villa appeared to drop a massive hint Ramsey could be West Ham-bound this week.

But Hammers News revealed West Ham face three big issues in signing Ramsey from Villa.

One of those was Villa’s reported asking price.

It was claimed by a top source close to the player’s camp that Villa want between £50-60m for Ramsey, who they feel is one of the best young midfielders in Europe.

Despite selling Kudus for £54.5m, the Irons can’t afford to spend that amount on a single player and must spread any funds raised across multiple signings.

There has been some good news overnight, though, from a leading source.

The top Hammers target was billed as a future England starter off the back of some impressive performances for Aston Villa.

Ramsey caught the eye with his powerful running, skill and dynamism.

Ramsey has lost his place as a regular starter, though, especially with the meteoric rise of Morgan Rogers.

West Ham hope being a key player and guaranteed starter at a big London club will help lure Ramsey away from Villa Park.

Now reportedly open to discussions under new conditions, the Hammers could be back in business for one of their key midfield targets of the summer.

The Daily Mail’s Aston Villa reporter Tom Collomosse was the first to report on West Ham’s interest in Ramsey back in June.

At the time West Ham’s owners said they expected Ramsey to join Spurs in a candid admission.

Villa dramatically lower Ramsey asking price by £10-20m

That was before Tottenham made their controversial move for Kudus, the first deal between the bitter rivals for over 14 years.

Now Collomosse has confirmed West Ham are actively trying to sign Ramsey.

And the good news for the Hammers is that Villa have lowered their asking price by as much as £10-20m.

“West Ham trying for Jacob Ramsey,” Collomosse reports on X.

“Villa have wanted £30-40m this summer for their homegrown midfielder, who is highly regarded by Emery.”

This is an exciting development for West Ham.

Ramsey is one of the top young midfielders around and may need a fresh start at a club where he is the main man.

A £30m deal is much more within West Ham’s price range and capabilities.

Further sales are in the pipeline in east London and the sale of Kudus – which is being paid in three instalments – means West Ham do have the money to move for a player or two in the £30m price range.

That’s because the first tranche of cash required to sign Ramsey from Villa would only be around £6m and then a further £6m a year over the course of the player’s contract, should he sign a five-year deal for example.

West Ham would fancy their chances of cutting a deal for the star given he is a client of Will Salthouse, a trusted agent and friend of Hammers chief David Sullivan and his sons Dave and Jack.
