West Ham want to sign Malang Sarr on loan from Chelsea this month according to a report from French outlet Foot Mercato.
The 22-year-old has only made five appearances for Chelsea this season so Thomas Tuchel may well be prepared to allow him to leave Stamford Bridge, on a temporary basis at least.
From his five appearances this term, only one has come in the Premier League. So surely he could be tempted by a move to the London Stadium.
The Hammers are very light in the centre-back department due to serious injuries suffered by Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma.
It seems as though the latter is close to returning but even then, we cannot afford to be left short again. It only takes one more injury to either Zouma, Craig Dawson or Issa Diop and we’re back in exactly the same situation again.
And it seems as though David Moyes could go shopping at Chelsea again in order to solve that particular issue…
West Ham eyeing swoop for Chelsea centre-back Malang Sarr
Foot Mercato reckon that the Hammers want to sign the 22-year-old Blues defender on loan until the end of the season.
The report does state that Sarr does not want to leave Chelsea on loan, however, and will need to be convinced if a move is to happen.
West Ham really should be pushing to make this one happen. The Frenchman would be an excellent addition for us in the January transfer window.
Patrick Vieira raved about Sarr in 2019 when he was in charge of Nice, describing his fellow countryman as a leader, when speaking to Sport 365:
“He has the personality of a leader. He answers simply and clearly. My role, with my staff, is to continue to make it progress, and to exchange with him so that he knows what the very high level is. We’ve seen it in the last few games, today Malang is better than it has been.”
Get the deal done
Sarr is brilliant in the air, is very strong and is quick along the ground. He has all of the attributes that West Ham have missed during the absences of Ogbonna and Zouma.
It seems as though it may be tricky to convince Sarr into a January move. And perhaps Chelsea won’t be too keen to let him join a club who, let’s face it, are their rivals for a place inside the top four!
The 22-year-old Blues ace would be a very smart January addition for the Hammers. Time will tell as to whether we are able to prise him way from Stamford Bridge though.
