West Ham United allegedly could stun Aston Villa by making a move to sign Brazilian ace Philippe Coutinho in the summer.
That’s according to a report from Spanish publication Sport who claims that the Hammers are set to challenge Aston Villa, Arsenal and Tottenham for the talented play-maker’s signature.
The 29-year-old joined the Villans from Barcelona on loan until the end of the season in January.
Aston Villa are believed to have an option to sign Coutinho for €40 million (£33 million) at the end of this season (Daily Mail).
Sport suggests that if Steven Gerrard can’t convince his board to shell out that fee in one hit and to meet the South American star’s wage demands, then it could be a free for all for his signature in the summer.
And it seems as though Hammers boss David Moyes could try to shock Villa by bringing the 29-year-old to the London Stadium…
West Ham could stun Villa by signing Coutinho
According to Sport, Coutinho joining Villa on a permanent deal is far from a foregone conclusion this summer with West Ham waiting in the wings.
The 29-year-old has been exceptional for Aston Villa since moving to the club in January. He has bagged four goals and three assists in nine Premier League games so far (Transfermarkt).
The silky Brazilian has clearly still got it.
We have to say though, there are a couple of reasons that make Coutinho moving to East London highly unlikely.
Firstly, we just don’t think that David Moyes or the West Ham board will pay anything like £33 million for a player who will be 30 in June.
Secondly, Coutinho currently earns a whopping £380k-a-week with Barcelona (Salary Sport).
Now, he surely won’t get anything like that from any of the clubs said to be interested in his services but even if he took a 50% pay cut he would still be earning £190k-a-week!
Coutinho may well still have a few years left playing at his very best level. And who knows, he could have a similar impact to the one that Jesse Lingard had at the London Stadium last season.
The Brazilian is an incredible technician and he still has a lot to offer at the very highest level.
This one just seems incredibly unrealistic at the moment and we think that Coutinho will be far more likely to join Aston Villa in the summer than West Ham United.
