West Ham’s need for defensive reinforcement is as obvious as it is urgent.
No team in the Premier League have conceded more goals than West Ham United (43) and it has so far been their unravelling.
Indeed, it’s easy to see why West Ham have been linked with a move for Charlie Cresswell of Toulouse.
The defence, or lack thereof, is what is currently on course to relegate the Hammers. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have outscored relegation rivals Nottingham Forest but have conceded far more goals.
Charlie Cresswell will be West Ham’s best defender…😍
How can Nuno convince him to join?
Cresswell, then, looks like a natural addition. The England U21 international looks like something of a leader and has impressed since joining the French club from Leeds in 2024.
Hammers News understands that West Ham are interested in signing Cresswell but, so far, there doesn’t appear to have been much progress.
Now, they could live to regret that.
Wolfsburg in talks over Charlie Cresswell deal
That’s because, according to leading German football journalist Florian Plettenberg, Wolfsburg are in concrete talks with Toulouse over the prospect of a move.
Cresswell has also been offered to Newcastle but it seems as if the Magpies will not be making a move at this stage.
While the central defender is under contract until 2028, Wolfsburg are considering him as an option after Brentford pushed to keep Kristoffer Ajer.
What would you say if you heard West Ham could RE-SIGN Kurt Zouma? 🇫🇷
Lack of action could cost West Ham over Charlie Cresswell
Earlier this month, the same journalist claimed that West Ham are keeping a close eye on Cresswell’s situation.
Clearly, those behind the scenes rate the player. Cresswell was also heavily linked with a move during the summer transfer window.

Quite why they haven’t moved, then, is unclear.
The idea that Wolfsburg could suddenly swoop in and take him is a concern and speaks to a lack of decisive action.
Perhaps the club have other targets in mind but there has been little confirmed progress just yet.
