Liverpool v Norwich City: The Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round

West Ham and Aston Villa set for £10 million battle to sign Liverpool ace Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

West Ham United allegedly could be set to do battle with Aston Villa for Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

That’s according to a report from The Athletic’s James Pearce who claims that Liverpool are open to offers of around £10 million for the 28-year-old.

David Moyes was linked with a move to bring Oxlade-Chamberlain to the London Stadium from Anfield last week by The Mirror.

And now it seems as though Aston Villa want to bring him to Villa Park as well.

That could represent a big problem for West Ham with the vast financial resources available to Steven Gerrard at Villa.

West Ham to battle Villa for Oxlade-Chamberlain

The Athletic’s James Pearce has suggested that Jurgen Klopp is open to letting the Ox leave Liverpool for around £10 million this summer.

And the Hammers and Villa are allegedly ‘lurking’. There is still the possibility that the 35-capped England international could sign a new contract with the Reds stay at Anfield, however.

He joined Liverpool from Arsenal in the summer of 2017 for around £35 million (BBC).

Oxlade-Chamberlain hasn’t had the impact that was expected of him on Merseyside, however.

Having said that, the Liverpool ace wouldn’t be the worst signing in the world for West Ham.

The 28-year-old is incredibly versatile. He can operate as a box-to-box midfielder, further forward in a play-making role or on either wing.

The Ox, who earns £110k-a-week (Football League FC) possesses blistering pace and he is incredibly powerful. He has all of the attributes needed to excel in the central midfield role and the Liverpool ace would provide West Ham with another truly top class option in the middle of the park.

The Liverpool man has experienced problems with injuries in the past and that will be somewhat of a concern for the Hammers.

If he can manage his fitness properly though, he could be a useful addition for West Ham. Former Arsenal teammate Aaron Ramsey described the Ox as ‘very explosive’ (Arsenal’s website).

Oxlade-Chamberlain will be desperate to play regular football during the first half of next season, with the World Cup in Qatar on the horizon.

£10 million for the Liverpool ace seems like decent value to us.

Whether West Ham are able to beat Villa in the race for Oxlade-Chamberlain’s signature remains to be seen.

It could be argued that the Hammers have a good chance of usurping Villa though, with European football on offer at the London Stadium.

Oxlade-Chamberlain’s motivations are unknown but judging by his character, we firmly believe that we have a better chance of signing him than Aston Villa do.

And if the ex-Arsenal man does come to the London Stadium for £10 million, we believe he would be a very useful, cost-effective option for West Ham.
