The East London outfit were believed to be very close indeed to signing the 25-year-old from Ajax.

The Evening Standard claim that with the Blues struggling to agree a fee with Brighton for Moises Caicedo, Mauricio Pochettino could switch his attention to the 25-year-old Hammers target.

Losing out on the Mexico international would be an absolute disaster for the Hammers.

He’s perfect for us and is exactly the kind of player Moyes should be signing, so missing out on him to Chelsea will be a major blow for us.

Alvarez is suited to Premier League football to a tee, what with his physicality and tenacious tackling.

Described by The Daily Mail as an ‘exceptional’ holding midfielder who breaks up play, Alvarez would be a superb replacement for Rice at the London Stadium.

However, it seems as though Chelsea could be a huge problem for us.

The thing is, West Ham appear to be well advanced in negotiations to sign the Mexican. So the Hammers owners need to do everything to push this through before Chelsea throw themselves properly into the race for his signature.
