A third West Ham player could be on their way to Southampton after a new Ben Johnson claim emerged ahead of the transfer window.

It seems the lines of communication between West Ham and Southampton remain very much open.

The Hammers loaned midfielder Flynn Downes to the relegated Saints for the season in the summer.

And West Ham sent £30m Southampton’s way for James Ward-Prowse too.

Yesterday Claret and Hugh – which has contacts inside the West Ham boardroom – claimed flop striker Danny Ings could return to St Mary’s in the January transfer window.

And a third West Ham player could be on their way to Southampton after a new Ben Johnson claim.

In order to make signings when the window opens in just over two weeks, West Ham must offload players to create space in the squad and raise funds – as confirmed to Hammers News by the top source inside West Ham.

Ings and contract rebel Johnson are just two players many West Ham fans feel need to be moved on to achieve just that.

Well it seems Southampton could help the Hammers out in that regard.

‘Remain keen’

That’s according to Mirror journalist Darren Witcoop.

The reporter says Saints are ready to cut short Mason Holgate’s loan from Everton and want to sign ‘versatile’ Johnson in January as his replacement.

“Southampton remain keen on West Ham defender Ben Johnson,” Witcoop said on X.

“With Saints ready to cut short Mason Holgate’s loan spell, Johnson could be on the move next month.

“Johnson, who offers versatility across the back line, was on Saints’ radar in summer.”

That may not be the only business done between West Ham and Southampton in January either.

Because talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook claims the Hammers make a very clever signing from the Saints for a knockdown fee.

Crook has has strong contacts at the south coast club so that claim carries extra weight.
