It seems West Ham fans were right to label their rivals Spurs delusional over their interest in Mateus Fernandes – because he has now moved a step closer to joining Man United.

New Hammers majority owner Daniel Kretinsky has confirmed the club does not need to sell players like Mateus Fernandes for financial reasons.

The Czech billionaire taking over from David Sullivan has been bad news for Manchester United and the plethora of elite clubs chasing Fernandes.

Man United end Spurs’ Fernandes hopes

When West Ham’s bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur suddenly threw their hat in the ring last week, it was scoffed at by football fans everywhere.

With Man United, PSG, Arsenal, Juventus, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich all genuinely interested in West Ham’s most valuable asset, Tottenham were accused of having delusions of grandeur – just like when they tried to be a founder member of a European Super League.

How would you feel about selling Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham? 👀

It would feel so wrong seeing him in a Spurs shirt 😬

Earlier this month Hammers News exclusively revealed that West Ham believe Man United have the edge over all other suitors in the race for Fernandes.

The Hammers do not want to sell the 21-year-old all-action Portuguese sensation but appreciate someone meeting their £80-85m valuation will be too good to turn down while also taking the player’s wishes into consideration.

Now Spurs’ hopes have been ended almost before they started as West Ham’s Fernandes moves closer to Man United.

Hammers News can confirm Spurs have indeed contacted West Ham about Fernandes just a month after sending their rivals down.

But club sources told us the conversation was a short one – because Fernandes and his camp have already agreed personal terms with Manchester United.

Fernandes has agreed Man United terms as West Ham wait on payment structure

In fact it has been stated the move to Old Trafford now looks all but a formality as soon as the Red Devils put together a payment package to West Ham’s liking.

Especially as Man United, and playing alongside his compatriot, idol and namesake Bruno Fernandes, is the West Ham ace’s clear preference.

So reports emerging from the likes of talkSPORT claiming Tottenham are ‘hijacking’ Man United’s move can be taken with a large pinch of salt.

Hammers fans would not take kindly to selling another top star to Spurs after Mohammed Kudus joined them last summer – which was the first deal between the rivals for nearly 15 years.

Although the genuine – albeit delusional – interest from Spurs is not doing the Hammers any harm in getting the deal done on their terms.

With Man United on the rise, West Ham also want to build in some chunky clauses should Michael Carrick’s side win any titles or silverware.

The club’s hierarchy have accepted they will sell Fernandes as part of West Ham’s plans to easily raise at least £180m in player sales this summer.
