Southampton now want to sign another West Ham United player it seems.

According to a report from Football Insider, Southampton are looking to follow up a season-long loan deal for Flynn Downes by signing West Ham full-back Ben Johnson.

A report earlier this summer claimed that the London-born defender is keen to leave the London Stadium in order to pursue more regular first-team football.

The 23-year-old Hammers right-back is allegedly seen by the Saints as a potential replacement for Tino Livramento in the summer transfer window.

Johnson has regressed badly over the past year or so, and it would be no surprise if David Moyes was to move him on.

Now it seems like a move to the Championship is beckoning for Johnson…

Southampton could sign another player from West Ham this summer – Ben Johnson

Football Insider reckon that the 23-year-old Hammer is firmly on the Saints’ radar this summer.

Johnson will be out of contract at the London Stadium next summer, so selling him now will make sense for the Hammers.

Johnson’s recent decline has been a huge shame to witness. He is obviously a big talent and he looked like the real deal when he made his senior debut for West Ham four years ago.

He’s gone on to make 87 senior appearances for the Hammers (Transfermarkt), but last season he fell off the pace dramatically.

His concentration levels have proven to be extremely poor, and his positional sense is nowhere near good enough for the Premier League.

If West Ham do sell Ben Johnson to Southampton this summer, it will be vital to have a top-class right-back lined up to come in and replace him. It seems as though that man could be Cody Drameh from Leeds.

I think it will be in everyone’s best interest for Johnson to leave the Hammers to join the Saints before the transfer window slams shut.
