Many West Ham United fans have urged the club to join Wolverhampton Wanderers in the race to sign controversial free agent striker Diego Costa.

West Ham cannot stand by and watch Wolves sign Jovic

West Ham desperately need a new striker in the January window. And Wolves are in the market too.

Michail Antonio’s persistent injury problems and Sebastien Haller’s struggles have left West Ham toothless up front.

Hammers and Wolves left toothless by injury problems and lack of depth

That was in evidence again as West Ham drew 0-0 at Southampton on Tuesday night.

The same could be said of Wolves, who have struggled for goals ever since Raul Jimenez fractured his skull.

With no timeframe put on Jimenez’s return, Wolves – like West Ham – are said to be in the market for a striker when the winter window opens.

Nuno Espirito Santo is reportedly interested in former Chelsea forward Costa, who was released by Atletico Madrid yesterday (Sky Sports).

Won’t Costa lot but should West Ham rival Wolves for ex Blues star?

It means the 32-year-old will be able to sign for a new club in January.

Wolves have been linked with a keen interest according to the likes of The Daily Mail.

But Costa ticks all the boxes as a typical West Ham signing of old. One last chance in the big time for a player who has seen better days.

Signing Costa may jar with David Moyes’s policy to sign young, energetic players hungry to shine on the big stage.

But the Scot has also made it clear he likes to have experience in key areas too.

And given the bleak financial picture painted by West Ham insiders Claret & Hugh ahead of the January window, Costa’s availability on a free may prove one of few viable options for Moyes.

West Ham in 10th are two places and two points better off than Wolves nearing the halfway point of the season.

So there is not much between the two clubs. But the lure of a return to London – where Costa scored a superb 60 goals in 120 games for Chelsea over four seasons – could prove decisive.

And it seems West Ham fans like the idea.

Many supporters took to social media to urge the Hammers to bring the forward to the London Stadium next month.

Fans champion the idea of bringing controversial striker back to London

Some acknowledged the Brazilian-born Spanish international comes with a somewhat controversial reputation for his aggressive style and acrimonious departure from Chelsea.

But some West Ham fans feel that is just what the Hammers need to kick on in this wide open season.

Costa featured less frequently on his return to Atletico, scoring 19 goals in 81 games.

And it should be noted it is three years since he left the Premier League.

But here’s what some fans – indeed many of them not just West Ham supporters – have been saying about the prospect of the Hammers signing Costa on a free transfer.
