West Ham United could be ready to hijack Aston Villa in their pursuit of Southampton centre-back Jan Bednarek.

That’s according to a report from The Sunday Mirror (print edition August 28th, page 72) who claim that the Hammers are well in race to sign the 26-year-old Southampton man, alongside Aston Villa.

David Moyes has already strengthened his centre-back ranks at the London Stadium with the additions of Nayef Aguerd and Thilo Kehrer.

It was reported earlier this week that Bednarek is most likely to join Villa rather than West Ham this summer.

It seems as though Moyes has not yet given up on bringing the 42-capped Poland international to the London Stadium before deadline day though…

West Ham to challenge Aston Villa for Jan Bednarek

The Sunday Mirror (print edition August 28th, page 72) reckon that the Hammers are far from done in the race to sign the 26-year-old Saints centre-back.

The 42-capped Poland international could be available for around £13 million this summer (Give Me Sport).

Now, we think that the 26-year-old could be a decent signing for West Ham.

He was in the top 10 in the Premier League for both interceptions and clearances last season (Premier League’s official website).

In 31 Premier league appearances last term, Bednarek averaged one tackle, 2.3 interceptions, 4.5 clearances and 2.9 successful aerial duels per game (Who Scored).

During those outings, he made 46.6 passes on average per match and recorded a completion rate of 81.7% (Who Scored).

He has been described as a ‘brick wall’ by The Athletic. Meanwhile, BT Sport have labelled him as ‘outstanding’.

Moyes is fairly well covered in the centre-back department. With Angelo Ogbonna and Craig Dawson now 34 and 32 respectively though, the addition of another younger central defender may not be a bad thing.

And if West Ham manage to beat Aston Villa to the signing of Jan Bednarek this summer, we think that will be a very good thing for the East London outfit.
