There is a ‘sad’ transfer situation on the horizon for West Ham over Declan Rice says a source inside club as the ‘truth’ is spoken.

For those who may have missed it, Hammers captain Rice effectively told the world he fully intends to leave West Ham in the summer during an England press conference on Thursday.

Rice’s desire to join an elite club regularly competing in the Champions League and fighting for the top trophies will not come as a surprise to any West Ham fans.

He has mentioned it in several interviews in the past and has thus far refused to sign a new West Ham contract after being offered in excess of £200k per week – and £83m over the course of the proposed deal.

Rice’s comments about his club career ambitions during an England World Cup press conference have resulted in a backlash against the midfielder from some Hammers fans and media pundits.

It has understandably been seen as a come and get me plea by many and did not sit well with a large section of West Ham supporters.

And there is a ‘sad’ transfer situation on the horizon for West Ham over Rice says a source inside the club as the ‘truth’ is spoken.

West Ham sources have told Claret and Hugh that they fully expect Rice to leave next summer regardless of what he is offered by the owners.

“The scenario has not changed since last summer when Claret and Hugh was told that he would be here until the end of this season but that offers would be considered after that…” Claret and Hugh report.

“A key source told us: “The truth is we expect things to happen as far as Declan is concerned in the summer – sad though that may be.”

We want players to be interesting, honest, to show character and answer questions properly.

But many feel what Rice did in that press conference – regardless of the clear understanding everyone has over his West Ham future – was out of order.

Rice has been absolutely fantastic for West Ham on and off the pitch. When he leaves he should be able to do so with his head held high having stayed longer and played more games than many other so-called “legends” who have come through West Ham’s academy.

But pronouncements like this week’s must be kept to a minimum.
