West Ham are leading the race to sign West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone according to a report from The Telegraph.

Hammers boss David Moyes has a lot of work to do in the January transfer window.
The Scot needs to sign a top-class centre-back and a striker.
It could be argued that we need another left-back and an attacking midfielder/winger as well. One position where West Ham are fairly well-stocked is the goalkeeping department.

In spite of that, it seems as though David Moyes is still planning for the future.
West Ham lead race for West Brom stopper Sam Johnstone
The 28-year-old Baggies goalkeeper is firmly on the Hammers’ radar according The Telegraph.
The report claims that West Ham won’t sign Johnstone in January but rather in the summer on a free transfer.
At first glance, this report seems kind of strange. Moyes already has Lukasz Fabianski, Alphonse Areola, Darren Randolph and young talents Nathan Trott, Joseph Anang and Krisztián Hegyi coming through the ranks.

Upon closer inspection though, it could be argued that we do indeed need a new keeper.
Lukasz Fabianski perhaps has one more year in him at the very most. Meanwhile, it would be no surprise to see Randolph moved on in January or the summer.
And on top of that, despite the undeniably talented group of young goalkeepers coming through, there is no guarantee that any of them will make it at the very highest level.
Having Areola, Johnstone and Fabianski as our three goalkeepers next season would put us in a very strong position indeed.
And signing the 28-year-old West Brom ace on a free transfer would represent an exceptional piece of business for West Ham.

David Moyes has more pressing concerns than signing a goalkeeper in the January transfer window. There is no harm in looking forward to the summer though. And Johnstone arriving at the London Stadium on a free would be a great way to start our summer business.
