West Ham have suffered a big blow with the news that incoming Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is prioritising a move to sign Darwin Nunez this summer.
According to a report from Portuguese outlet Record (print edition May 9th, page 9), Manchester United are ‘counting’ on bringing the prolific 22-year-old striker to Old Trafford before the start of next season.
And that is obviously terrible news for West Ham.
West Ham are in desperate need of a new centre-forward to provide stiff competition for our only striker Michail Antonio.
Darwin Nunez would be absolutely perfect for the East London outfit.
It seems as though Man United could beat us to the punch in the race for the Benfica ace though…
Manchester United prioritising move to sign Darwin Nunez
The Benfica ace is a priority transfer target for incoming Man United manager Erik ten Hag according to a report from Record (print edition May 9th, page 9).
The 22-year-old is a truly brilliant striker. He will be an unbelievable signing for whichever club wins the race for his signature.
Nunez has now scored an incredible 26 goals in 28 league games for Benfica this season and has 34 in 41 appearances in total (Transfermarkt).
The 22-year-old’s playing style is quintessentially South American. He is a tenacious presser, plays with proper physicality and has real technical ability. He seems to be ideally suited to the Premier League what with its intense and robust nature.
Darwin Nunez is absolutely perfect for West Ham so it’s little wonder why Moyes is so desperate to secure his signature in the summer transfer window.
With Manchester United allegedly so keen to sign Darwin Nunez, however, our pursuit of the Benfica ace could be set to end in disappointment.
Nunez could be up for grabs for around £50 million at the end of the season according to a report from A Bola. That seems like very good value to us.
Whether West Ham will be able to beat Man United the race to sign the Uruguayan star, however, remains to be seen.
