Manchester United are reportedly keen to sign Issa Diop from West Ham United in the summer transfer window.
That’s according to a report from Foot Mercato who claim that Ralf Rangnick wants to bring the 25-year-old Hammers centre-back to Old Trafford for incoming Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag.
West Ham manage David Moyes will be desperate to bolster his central defensive ranks at the London Stadium in the summer rather than weaken them.
Diop has been a much-maligned figure in East London this season but he was absolutely brilliant against Lyon a couple of weeks ago. And that performance in the Europa League got the Hammers fans believing that the 6ft 4in defender still has a lot to offer Moyes.
Perhaps Manchester United scouts were watching that game, Ralf Rangnick in particular, because it seems as though the Premier League giants are keen to prise Diop away from the London Stadium in the summer…
Manchester United eye summer swoop for Issa Diop
Foot Mercato reckon that Man United are keen to sign the 25-year-old West Ham man in the summer.
The Hammers are allegedly prepared to let him leave the London Stadium for around £13 million.
After arriving at the London Stadium in the summer of 2018 for around £25 million (The Express), Diop was one of the very best central defenders in the Premier League during his debut season.
The 25-year-old, who earns around £63k-a-week according to Football League FC, experienced a poor 2020/21 campaign though and has been nowhere near his best during the first seven months of this season.
The Hammers ace did redeem himself somewhat with his superb performance against Lyon. That could all be in vain though, with Diop now out injured with an Achilles problem.
It’s such a shame that Diop has been ruled out for the rest of the season, considering the fact that he finally showed his true ability once again a couple of weeks ago.
Should Manchester United sign him and he go on to be a huge hit at Old Trafford, questions will obviously be asked of Moyes’s judgment.
The thing is, Diop has been so poor for West Ham in general over the past 18 months that selling him would probably be the right call at the moment.
If Man United are willing to sign Diop, perhaps we should ask them to pay closer to £20 million for the defender. Then it might just be worth our while selling him.
