Ligue 1 outfit Lyon are allegedly in talks to sign centre-back Issa Diop from West Ham United this summer.

That’s according to a report from L’Equipe who claim that Lyon are hoping to finalise a deal to sign the 25-year-old Hammers defender sooner rather than later.

West Ham are apparently prepared to make a big loss on Diop – a player we signed from Toulouse for around £25 million four years ago.

David Moyes has already strengthened his centre-back ranks this summer by signing Nayef Aguerd from Rennes for around £28 million (The Evening Standard).

We have extensively outlined just how good a signing the Morocco international will be for us.

And it would be no surprise if Aguerd’s arrival coincided with Diop’s exit from the Hammers…

Lyon in talks to sign West Ham centre-back

L’Equipe reckon that Lyon are desperate to sign the 6ft 4in Hammers defender this summer and are in deep discussions about bringing him to France.

It was claimed a few months ago by French publication Foot Mercato that West Ham could sell Diop for just £12 million in the summer transfer window.

Despite the fact that that fee would represent a £13 million loss on the £25 million that we paid to sign him, it would still be decent business for the East London club, such has been the drastic regression of Diop over the past 18 months or so.

The 25-year-old has been a liability for the Hammers most of the times that he has played this season. He has no positional sense and continues to make extremely rash decisions that have proved costly for us.

The harsh reality of the matter is that the former Toulouse man just isn’t good enough to be playing regular Premier League football.

If nothing else, it will be good to get his £63k-a-week salary (Football League FC) off the wage-bill.

The Hammers have already brought in an upgrade in the form of Nayef Aguerd.

And with West Ham defender Diop apparently in talks with Lyon, it might not be too long before he leaves the London Stadium.
