Old European foes Lyon are set to make a bid for two West Ham players in January and David Moyes should accept.

The January transfer window is now less than three weeks away and proof – if it were needed – that West Ham must be active arrived in the 5-0 drubbing at Fulham.

Regardless of the mitigating circumstances, the thrashing exposed the drop-off in quality in key areas between the first choice XI and West Ham’s back-ups.

It also exposed the complete lack of depth in key areas, particularly up front and at full-back.

David Moyes stated at the weekend he wants to sign a striker and that he is keen to “add to what he is building” with his new-look West Ham side.

Old foes Lyon to make bid for West Ham duo

The top source inside the club exclusively told Hammers News recently that West Ham do intend to be active next month.

But they must move some players on to “free up slots in the squad” and raise funds, partially to satisfy FFP rules.

Now it seems the Hammers have the perfect chance to do just that.

Because old foes Lyon are set to make a bid for a West Ham duo and Moyes should accept.

West Ham sent Lyon into a downward spiral when they knocked them out of the Europa League over two feisty encounters with plenty of needle two years ago.

Now according to L’Équipe, the struggling Ligue 1 side want to sign West Ham’s French-speaking duo Nayef Aguerd and Said Benrahma in January.

Moyes should accept any serious offer

That’s after being given the green light by the DNCG, French football’s financial watchdog, to spend big in January in order to save themselves from relegation to Ligue 2.

Reports claim Lyon have around £40m to spend and want the Hammers pair – who both face uncertain futures at the club.

Benrahma has become a bit-part player under Moyes this season and fans have been calling for error-strewn Aguerd to be dropped for much of the campaign.

Both players are set to go to AFCON with Algeria and Morocco respectively. So the Hammers will be without them for five or six games between January and February anyway.

Neither player has a long-term future at West Ham

Regardless West Ham need to cut their losses on Aguerd. The soon-to-be 28-year-old hits the odd decent diagonal ball.

But he makes far too many mistakes to be a top level Premier League defender as was evident yet again in the games at Spurs and Fulham.

It has been clear for some time that Benrahma has no future at West Ham under Moyes. Fans are consistently frustrated with his lack of end product and an ill Pablo Fornals even started ahead of him at Craven Cottage.

If Moyes can get around £25-30m for the pair then it would be good business and allow him to make vital additions.

It is not easy selling under-performing or marginalised players. Most clubs want them on loan with an option.

So should Lyon submit a serious bid then West Ham must not hesitate.
