Now Newcastle boss Eddie Howe wants ‘for sale’ international Harry Maguire but Man United prefer the alleged West Ham offer.

West Ham fans who have followed the transfer windows since Eddie Howe’s arrival at Newcastle United will know that wherever the Hammers go, the Magpies seem to follow.

At one stage last summer Newcastle’s interest in West Ham’s transfer dealings and targets was described as an ‘obsession’.

Howe even tried to hijack West Ham’s deals for both Alphonse Areola and Nayef Aguerd at the 11th hour.

Newcastle also emerged as a main rival to West Ham’s attempts to sign Jesse Lingard in a permanent deal from Manchester United before he eventually joined Forest.

Well that situation shows no signs of changing this summer if new reports involving Man United are to be believed.

The Hammers have been consistently linked with a move for Red Devils defender Harry Maguire for some time now.

Last month it was claimed a deal between West Ham and Man United could be on the cards for Maguire to ease FFP concerns at Old Trafford.

The same report stated West Ham’s interest in the England defender was genuine back in January.

And the London Stadium is the most likely destination for the man Manchester United are so desperate to ship out, they’re willing to pay him £10m to leave.

The Daily Mail claimed West Ham are the clear favourites to sign Maguire this summer.

And the pay-off from Man United will lower his wage demands to a more affordable level that the Hammers are paying other top first team stars.

Man United want sale and would prefer a club who are not a direct competitor

According to The Sun and Sky Sports, Newcastle want to sign Maguire on loan.

But Man United would prefer to sell, making the alleged move from West Ham clearly more favourable.

Aston Villa have also enquired about loaning Maguire, which reports claim Erik ten Hag is more open to as they do not see Villa as a direct rival like the Magpies.

For that reason too, selling to West Ham would make even more sense for Man United.

There is no question David Moyes will have money to spend with the impending £100m sale of Declan Rice.

Spurs are also being linked with Maguire – but again Man United would see them as a more direct competitor than West Ham.

Whoever gets permission to talk to the England international still has a job on their hands persuading him to join it would seem.

Reports have been emerging from Old Trafford that Maguire would be content to remain at the club as a bit-part player.
