However, he joined Barcelona in the end, with the Hammers unable to compete with the Catalan giants financially.
And now one of our Premier League rivals could be about to blow us out of the water financially as well…
Newcastle eyeing summer move to sign West Ham target Raphinha
Mundo Deportivo suggest that the Magpies will ‘spare no expense’ to bring the Brazilian winger to St James’ Park this summer.
According to a report from Forbes, Barcelona will sell Raphinha for the same fee that they paid for him – €60 million (£53 million).
There’s no way that West Ham will be spending that kind of cash on an attacking wide player this summer and besides, he will surely only want to join a club that can offer Champions League football anyway.

Newcastle signing Raphinha would be a sign of just how quickly things have changed.
Last season the Hammers were a top seven side fighting for the Champions League places all season long whilst the Toon were battling relegation throughout the campaign.
How things have changed now though! Newcastle signing Raphinha would be a sign that they have far more ambition than West Ham as a club, and have the money to back it up.
The South American is a superb player and has been described as ‘unreal’ by Talk Barca. Newcastle signing players like the Barcelona ace will highlight the massive gap between them and us at the moment.
There are plenty of us who still doubt whether our apparent interest in signing the Brazilian was even genuine in the first place! If West Ham were really in the race for Raphinha though, the owners should have got the deal done then when we were flying in the Premier League.
