Newcastle United have made contact with West Ham about potentially signing Issa Diop in January according to Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna.
The 24-year-old has been playing regularly for the Hammers overs the past month and it seems as though that has piqued the interest of Newcastle.
Magpies boss Eddie Howe will have plenty of funds at his disposal this summer.
One of his priorities will be to bring a centre-back to St James’ Park with Newcastle really struggling defensively at the moment.
The problem is, West Ham are short at centre-back as well. David Moyes has somewhat of a central defensive crisis on his hands at the London Stadium with Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma both out with long-term injuries.
So surely the Hammers can’t afford to let Diop go…unless Newcastle submit an offer we simply can’t refuse of course.
Newcastle chasing West Ham ace Issa Diop
The Toon allegedly could make a move to sign the 24-year-old Hammers defender in the January transfer window.
That’s according to Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna:
As poor as Diop can be at times, he still has some good qualities and he’s only 24.
Signed for £25 million in 2018 (The Express), the 6ft 4in centre-back hasn’t really developed like many though he would at the London Stadium.
His decision making and positional awareness is still well off the mark.
Diop just seems lost at the heart of West Ham’s defence at times.
It’s a real shame because he has all of the ingredients needed to be a really elite Premier League defender.
Perhaps he will mature and become a top-class centre-half one day. He might not though. And should Newcastle come in with a big offer for him next month, David Moyes may well decide to move him on.
If West Ham are to sell Diop to Newcastle though, it will be vitally important that we have a replacement lined up, or even already signed, before the 24-year-old leaves.
