Transfer insider Ben Jacobs has revealed the latest on Manchester United’s pursuit of West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes.

The 21-year-old has been outstanding for the Hammers this season, drawing interest from several top Premier League clubs.

Given that United are expecting to sign two central midfielders this summer, Fernandes’ name is firmly on their shortlist.

Jacobs has now explained West Ham’s stance on Fernandes’ departure, including a potential new contract offer.

Mateus Fernandes to Manchester United transfer update

Man Utd have been linked with many quality midfielders, such as Elliott Anderson, Adam Wharton and Fernandes.

The latter is expected to be the least expensive, especially if West Ham are relegated from the Premier League

The Hammers paid £42 million to sign him from Southampton last summer and are looking to make a decent profit.

The finances would not be an issue for the Red Devils, who could have up to £150 million to spend on midfielders.

They would also find it relatively easy to agree on personal terms with Fernandes, as he would be willing to move.

Jacobs has reported on The United Stand that the player’s representatives have even been in contact with United for “four to six weeks.”

However, the deal could become complicated if Nuno Espirito Santo’s side find a way to avoid relegation.

Jacobs has suggested that the deal “will likely be off” if they stay, unless another team is willing to pay over the odds.

In that scenario, West Ham would offer Fernandes a lucrative new deal to convince him to stay for at least another season.
