Lyon have allegedly now actually opened discussions to sign West Ham United defender Issa Diop ahead of the summer transfer window.

That’s according to today’s print version of L’Equipe (Friday April 1st).

We covered a claim from L’Equipe right here on Hammers News yesterday suggesting that Ligue 1 side Lyon want to sign the 25-year-old Hammers centre-back in the summer.

And it seems as though Lyon are already progressing with their initial interest in bringing the West Ham defender to the Groupama Stadium.

Diop has been really poor over the past 18 months or so. He looked like a really top-class defender when he arrived at the London Stadium from Toulouse for around £25 million in the summer of 2018 (The Express).

The 25-year-old has regressed badly since the start of the 2020/21 campaign though. And it now seems as though his days in East London could well be numbered…

Lyon have started talks to sign West Ham man Issa Diop

L’Equipe reckon that discussions have begun between Lyon and Diop ahead of a potential move back to France for the 6ft 4in centre-back.

Moving him on this summer will definitely be the right thing to do.

It has been suggested that David Moyes will allow the former Toulouse man to leave the London Stadium should West Ham receive an offer in the region of £15 million (The Daily Mail).

Despite the fact that that kind of fee would represent a £10 million loss on what the Hammers paid for him nearly four years ago, it would still be decent business for us.

It has been clear to see over the past year or so that the 25-year-old isn’t good enough to be playing regular Premier League football.

Moyes needs to make a major upgrade in the centre-back department this summer.

And if Lyon do sign Diop, West Ham will be in a good place to do just that.
