Manuel Lanzini could make a shock exit from West Ham this summer with a return to River Plate allegedly on the cards.

That’s according to a report from La Pagina Millonaria who claims that the 29-year-old Hammers ace has actually already held a meeting with River Plate vice president Matías Patanian.

The news came as somewhat of a shock last night when it emerged, purely because Lanzini has played such a key role for West Ham United this season.

The 29-year-old play-maker joined the Hammers on loan from Al Jazira in the summer of 2015. He then made his move to West Ham a permanent one the following year for around £8 million (ESPN).

The South American was brilliant for West Ham during his first couple of years in East London but he regressed badly after suffering an ACL injury in the summer of 2018. Some Hammers fans thought we would never see the best of our little diamond ever again.

Lanzini was an absolute shadow of his former self for the three years following the serious injury that he suffered.

The Argentinian ace has finally rediscovered his best form for West Ham though. He has been sensational this season and has played a pivotal role for the Hammers. However, it seems as though the end could be near for the Argentine in East London…

La Pagina Millonaria claims that the 29-year-old has held a meeting with his former club’s president and actually does want to make a rerun to River Plate.

It is suggested that it is possible that Lanzini could head back to his boyhood club at the end of this season.

We just can’t see that happening though. Lanzini is one of the most important players David Moyes has at his disposal at the London Stadium.

The South American ace has played a key role for the Hammers this season, bagging six goals and three assists (Transfermarkt).

He has been occupying a slightly deeper role of late and has really excelled. Manu is vital to the way in which we play and provides West Ham with something in the middle of the park that we don’t otherwise possess.

It would be a huge surprise to see Lanzini moved on this summer. He is under contract at the London Stadium until the summer of 2023 but the Hammers have an option to extend that deal by a further 24 months.

Perhaps the summer of 2025 will be the time when Lanzini finally leaves West Ham. He will be 32 then and would have spent 10 years with the East London outfit.

A return to River Plate certainly seems on the cards for Lanzini. We just don’t think it will be anytime soon, however.
