Huge Timo Werner claim made as West Ham ramp up search for new striker

West Ham United are said to be back in the hunt for Red Bull Leipzig forward Timo Werner in the January transfer window.

According to a report from German outlet Fussball Transfers, Leipzig will not stand in the way of Timo Werner if West Ham do indeed make a move to sign him in the January transfer window.

Hammers boss David Moyes desperately needs to add another striker to his ranks at the London Stadium this winter – preferably one with real pace.

Werner, 27, is someone who the Scot has chased over the past few months, and I think he’d be the ideal January signing for us, in spite of his struggles with Chelsea.

The 57-capped Germany international is absolutely rapid and would fit into Moyes’s counter attacking set up like a glove.

Werner rejoined Leipzig from Chelsea in the summer for around £25 million (Sky Sports), but his second stay with the Bundesliga side could be a short-lived one…

West Ham eyeing ambitious Timo Werner swoop

Fussball Transfers are claiming that the 27-year-old is firmly on the Hammers’ radar ahead of the January transfer window.

He earns £164k-a-week (Salary Sport), so that kind of salary would make him our highest paid player. He already took a hefty pay-cut to move back to Leipzig from Chelsea, so it’s unlikely he’ll be prepared to take another one to help facilitate a London Stadium switch.

I suspect that he may have to be prepared to drop down to around £130-150k-a-week, if we are to have any chance of signing him.

Werner has only scored two goals in 14 games for Leipzig so far this season – hardly prolific by any means. However, he bagged 28 goals in 34 Bundesliga games for them in the 2019/20 season, and has 208 in 467 career games to his name (Transfermarkt).

So he’s certainly a capable striker, and the beauty of the German is that he can play on the left or right wing as well.

I just think that Timo Werner would be the ideal fit for the way that West Ham play right now. And if we manage to sign him, we’ll be in a very strong position going forward as far as I’m concerned.
