Hammers boss David Moyes has hailed the £17.5m West Ham signing of Maxwel Cornet from Burnley after the move was confirmed.
West Ham have been looking to seriously beef up their left-hand side, particularly after Moyes sanctioned the departure of Arthur Masuaku this week.
One of the players West Ham have been pursuing is Burnley’s Cornet and a deal was agreed with the Clarets yesterday.
‘He’s impressed me’ Moyes hails £17.5m signing of Cornet
Moyes took the unusual step of dropping his guard over transfers when he confirmed Cornet was ‘in the building’ during his first West Ham press conference of the season.
Now the move for a player who scored nine goals and laid on one assist in 21 games for Burnley last season has been made official.
The former France Under 21 international has signed a five-year deal with West Ham with the option of a further year (whufc.com).
‘He’s impressed me’ was the verdict of Moyes as he hails the £17.5m West Ham signing of Cornet.
“He is a versatile player with good experience, both in the Premier League and in European football, and will add strength and quality to our squad,” Moyes told West Ham’s official website.
“He made a big impact with his performances for Burnley last season and he has impressed me with his desire to improve and challenge himself further here at West Ham.
“We look forward to bringing Maxwel into the group and wish him all the best in his career with us.”
It is easy to see why Cornet appeals to Moyes and West Ham.
He can play left-back, left wingback, attacking midfield, across the forward line and even as a striker.
He has, at one stage of another, played in all those various roles during his time with Lyon, Burnley and the Ivory Coast national team.
It seems the signing came too late to hit the midday deadline for Cornet to be registered to face Man City in the season opener on Sunday.
It will be interesting to see what position and players Moyes targets next in the transfer window having made it perfectly clear the club simply must make more signings.
And it will also be interesting to see where Moyes uses Cornet at West Ham given his versatility.
