West Ham manager David Moyes desperately tried to bring a top-class striker to the London Stadium in January.
The Scot’s main target was thought to be Benfica ace Darwin Nunez.
News broke on January 30th that the Hammers were eyeing up a shock move to bring the 22-year-old Benfica striker to the London Stadium before the window slammed shut (90 min and Sky Sports).

West Ham actually made a solid offer for Nunez according to Gianluca Di Marzio via Valentina Fass from Sky Italy, when speaking to Sky Sports (January 31st, 11:53 am).
It was alleged that David Moyes had made a £42 million bid for the Uruguayan hitman. Benfica wanted more money though and eventually he stayed with the Portuguese club. It was just too late in the day for the Hammers to get a deal of that magnitude over the line.
It seems as though West Ham will be back in for the Benfica ace in the summer though…
Fabrizio Romano says West Ham will go back in for striker in the summer transfer window
Nunez has been in sensational form for Benfica so far this season.
The Uruguay international has bagged six goals in his last eight games for the Lisbon giants, taking his tally to 26 in 33 this season (Transfermarkt).

Nunez will undoubtedly be a man in high demand in the summer.
He won’t come cheap either. According to A Bola, Benfica are now demanding as much as €80 million (£68 million) for Nunez.
That’s a serious amount of money for West Ham to contemplate spending on one player this summer. It appears as though we are well in the race for Nunez’s signature though.
Highly respected journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that the Hammers have a ‘good chance’ of bringing the South American to the London Stadium in the summer transfer window:
Wow, what a statement signing Nunez would be for West Ham United.
The Uruguayan would be an exceptional addition for the Hammers. Nunez’s playing style is quintessentially South American. He is a tenacious presser, plays with real physicality and has real technical ability. The 22-year-old seems to be ideally suited for the Premier League what with its intense and robust nature.
Sure, £68 million on Nunez would represent a huge risk considering the fact that he actually has no experience of playing in England.
In this day and age though, that is the kind of fee you need to be paying for a top-class striker, if you have genuine ambition of gatecrashing the top four.
And West Ham should go all out for Nunez. The Uruguayan is a special talent and he could easily be worth double the fee needed to sign him this summer in just a few year’s time.
