Ex Arsenal star Alexandre Lacazette played a big role in West Ham missing out on free agent midfielder Corentin Tolisso.
David Moyes desperately needs to strengthen his central midfield options following the retirement of Mark Noble and departure of loan flop Alex Kral.
West Ham and Arsenal have both been linked with an exciting move for Belgian central midfield star Amadou Onana.
The Hammers have reportedly seen a £20m bid rejected by Lille and Arsenal are also allegedly keen on the 6ft 5in starlet (The Athletic).
It comes after West Ham failed to seal a deal for reported target Tolisso.
West Ham have been linked with a plethora of central midfielders but Tolisso was one of the most interesting names out there. Especially given the Hammers could have picked him up on a free transfer.
While Arsenal threaten to scupper West Ham’s hopes of signing midfielder Onana, it seems one of their recently departed former players did just that for Moyes’ plans to land Tolisso.
Because it has emerged that ex Arsenal star Lacazette played a big role in West Ham missing out on free agent midfielder Tolisso when he joined him at Lyon at the weekend.
Tolisso had previously stated that he was open to a move to the Premier League (90Min).
that Alexandre Lacazette was involved in convincing the player to return to Lyon. Tolisso rejoined his formative club yesterday on a five-year deal after a five year spell at Bayern Munich.
But during the press conference the midfielder revealed ex Arsenal star – and one time West Ham target Lacazette – played a key role in convincing him to reject interest from elsewhere to join him at Lyon.
“To tell you the truth, I think he messaged me more in the last month than he has in the last five years!
“Alex has played a big role, he’s really a friend for me outside football. The fact that he was there was an extra asset in my decision. Whatever happens, I had the desire and the ambition to come back to Lyon, I just didn’t know when.
“It’s happened now, but I’ve always had this desire.”
A World Cup winner with France and a Champions League and four-time Bundesliga winner with Bayern, Tolisso is a top class player on his day.
He can play in the orthodox central midfield role, in the number 10 position and in the deep-lying holding role.
So he would have been a brilliant, versatile asset for Moyes at West Ham.
Alas, like so many targets the Hammers are linked with, it seems it was not meant to be – if of course Moyes ever truly was serious about signing him in the first place.
