The door appears to be ajar for West Ham United to sneak in and sign one of Tottenham Hotspur’s key targets on deadline day.
West Ham and Tottenham are both believed to be on the hunt for new signings before the January transfer window slams shut at 11pm on deadline day tomorrow.
The Hammers are closing in on the signing of Evan Ferguson, but more reinforcements are required at the London Stadium.
Graham Potter has one of the weakest squads in the Premier League at his disposal right now.
And that has to change if the West Ham head coach is to oversee some genuine progress at the club over the next few months.
The need for a powerful box-to-box central midfielder is obvious for everyone to see.

However, our lack of quality options in the central defensive department is really concerning if you ask me.
Signing a centre-back should be one of Potter’s top priorities.
West Ham could seal deadline day deal as star rejects Tottenham
The opportunity is there for the Hammers to make a big splash in the transfer market within the next 24 hours.
According to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport (print edition February 2nd, page 5), Fikayo Tomori has rejected the chance to join Tottenham.
Now, you might say that if he’s rejected Spurs, he will have no interest in joining the Hammers.
However, I would counter that by suggesting that the promise of guaranteed starts ahead of the World Cup in 2026 might just tip the scales in our favour.
West Ham have been heavily linked with a move to sign Tomori over the past month or so, most recently just yesterday.
The 27-year-old would be a stunning signing for the Hammers.

And we should be going all out to make a deal happen for the former Chelsea centre-back.
Tomori centre-back is a top-class player, and it goes without saying that he’d be a big upgrade on Konstantinos Mavropanos.
The former Chelsea man is incredibly strong in the air, and possesses decent pace. He’s an intelligent defender and his positional awareness is absolutely spot on.
I think he would improve the way we defend as a team immediately, what with his organisational skills and leadership.
If West Ham could pip Tottenham to the signing of Fikayo Tomori on deadline day, I think it would be a big statement from us.
