Door now open for West Ham to sign England international but there’s a major catch

West Ham United may be able to sign a proven England international either in January or next summer, but there is one very big catch.

West Ham already have one England international in the form of Jarrod Bowen, but another one apparently could be on his way to the London Stadium.

Hammers manager David Moyes has strengthened his squad considerably over the past few months, but more additions are needed if we are to really make some genuine progress.

West Ham could sign England international but there’s a catch

Football Insider reckon that the door is now open for the Hammers to sign Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City.

Meanwhile, The Sun on Sunday (print edition October 15th, page 75) claim that Man City want to sign Lucas Paqueta, and the 26-year-old’s dream is to move to The Etihad.

And now TEAMtalk are have mooted the possibility of a potential swap deal.

The East London outfit were heavily linked with a move to sign Phillips – a 29-capped England international – in the summer as a replacement for Rice.

Moyes went down another route in the end though, by signing James Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez.

Described by Breaking the Lines as an ‘amazing’ midfielder, the 27-year-old is definitely a top-class player. The problem is that he suffers injuries on a consistent basis.

And let’s have it right, he is not on the same level as Lucas Paqueta. I would be fuming if we sold the Brazilian and replaced him with Phillips, regardless of how much money we receive in return…

England international could be West Ham bound but the rumours are hugely concerning

If Moyes sells Paqueta, or is forced into doing so should Man City activate his £85 million release clause, replacing him with Kalvin Phillips is be the worse possible thing he could do.

It would be such a backwards step for the Hammers – I really don’t think Moyes should be going anywhere near the 27-year-old.

There are far better options out there. Replacing Paqueta will be nigh on impossible as it is but it’s worth remembering that we’ve already signed Mohammed Kudus. The Ghanaian is definitely someone who could play in the Brazilian’s role.

If Moyes brings Phillips to the London Stadium to replace Paqueta, there will be a mutiny amongst the Hammers fans, I have no doubt about that.
