David Ornstein update on £30m Diego Carlos transfer points to Spurs or West Ham

Athletic journalist David Ornstein has delivered an exclusive update on the £30m Diego Carlos transfer and it points to Spurs or West Ham.

Newcastle United have been heavily linked with a £30m move for the 28-year-old Brazilian defender this month.

In the last couple of days reports have claimed another mystery Premier League club had matched Newcastle’s bid to Sevilla for the centre-back.

Biggest STAR Your Club Are Trying To SIGN This Month

The Express speculated last night that West Ham could be one of those clubs.

And it is perhaps no surprise given David Moyes has made it clear he wants to sign a defender this month despite Kurt Zouma’s imminent return having lost Angelo Ogbonna for the season.

Given Issa Diop’s performances in their stead, is it any wonder?

West Ham’s top four rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have also been mentioned as the possible mystery club rivalling Newcastle for Carlos.

But in an exclusive update from Athletic journalist Ornstein, the Gunners have been ruled out with his report seemingly pointing in the direction of Tottenham or West Ham.

“Another Premier League club have made a major offer to Sevilla for Diego Carlos in a bid to sign the Brazilian centre-back during the January transfer window,” Ornstein reports for The Athletic.

“The Athletic understands, however, that a London club, understood not to be Arsenal, has made an approach which could scupper Newcastle’s efforts.”

Chelsea have a plethora of defenders and are desperately trying to tie down Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen to new long-term deals.

Signing a new centre-back for £30m – with Malang Sarr, Trevoh Chalobah and Thiago Silva also fighting for a place – would not help that cause.

The only other London clubs capable of bidding £30m and realistically able to lure Carlos would be Spurs and West Ham.

According to talkSPORT Newcastle could be close to calling off their own move for Carlos amid the interest of the mystery rival.

It will all come out in the wash soon enough as the clock ticks down on the transfer window.
