David Moyes has made it very clear three players are on their way out of West Ham this month by his actions yesterday.

West Ham ended 2023 on a huge high with the win over Arsenal putting them in the top six of the Premier League.

But they start 2024 with a wake-up call over whether they can stay there with a squad clearly lacking quality in depth in key positions.

David Moyes has done a terrific job at West Ham and looks set to be rewarded with a new contract this month.

But the Scot is also responsible for putting together a Hammers squad which has little beyond an excellent starting XI despite spending over £450m in four years.

Moyes has made it clear three players are on their way

As fans will know by now, West Ham must ship players out before they can make signings in the January transfer window.

And Moyes has made it clear three players are on their way out of West Ham.

That’s if his actions are anything to go by in the drab 0-0 draw with Brighton.

When the team news came in, fans were disappointed to learn Vladimir Coufal was not in the squad due to illness.

German international Thilo Kehrer, who has been frozen out by Moyes this season, would be the best alternative on paper.

Actions speak louder than words

But Ben Johnson stepped in and Kehrer was nowhere to be seen. That appears to confirm speculation we reported yesterday that the utility defender is on the verge of sealing a move to Monaco.

With no Mohammed Kudus or Lucas Paqueta many fans expected to see Maxwel Cornet finally get a chance. At least off the bench as he is the most natural replacement for Kudus and can also play on the left.

But no. Moyes went with Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals, who both struggled to make any impact whatsoever.

With West Ham offering nothing going forward, the game was crying out for substitutes and pace.

But Moyes did not use Cornet at all, bringing on Divin Mubama for Benrahma and shifting Fornals over to the left instead.

£43m trio set to depart?

That only served to make West Ham even worse but still Cornet remained on the bench as his future was made crystal clear.

Then there was Danny Ings. Moyes is damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t when it comes to Ings.

But if someone of his experience is being overlooked for a young forward who is yet to show any signs of being ready to play Premier League football despite West Ham missing key players then it’s clear he too is on his way out.

Cornet has been linked with Burnley and Everton while Ings has also been linked with the Clarets as well as Wolves and Southampton.

On this evidence it will be no surprise to see all three depart in the coming days or weeks.
