Darwin Nunez has been absolutely on fire for Benfica since his failed transfer to West Ham United in January.

News broke on January 30th that the Hammers were eyeing up a shock move to bring the 22-year-old Benfica striker to the London Stadium before the window slammed shut (90 min and Sky Sports).

West Ham actually made a solid offer for Nunez according to Gianluca Di Marzio via Valentina Fass from Sky Italy, when speaking to Sky Sports (January 31st, 11:53 am).

It was alleged that David Moyes had made a £42 million bid for the Uruguayan hitman. Benfica wanted more money though and eventually he stayed with the Portuguese club.

It was just too late in the day for the Hammers to get a deal of that magnitude over the line.

It seems as though the transfer could be even more difficult for West Ham to get done in the summer though…

Darwin Nunez on fire after failed West Ham transfer

The 22-year-old striker has been in sensational form for Benfica since the Hammers failed to prise him away from the Portuguese outfit on deadline day last month.

Nunez has bagged three goals in just two games for the Lisbon giants, taking his tally to 23 in 27 this season (Transfermarkt).

The South American forward really does look the business and it’s just such a shame we didn’t push harder to sign him earlier on in the January window…

The Uruguayan would have been an exceptional addition for West Ham. Nunez’s playing style is quintessentially South American. He is a tenacious presser, plays with real physicality and has real technical ability. The 22-year-old seems to be ideally suited for the Premier League what with its intense and robust nature.

Now though, the Hammers really do have our work cut-out if we are to sign him in the summer.

According to A Bola, Benfica are now demanding as much as €80 million (£68 million) for Nunez. It is also suggested that numerous clubs will be trying to sign the Uruguay international in the summer.

So judging by that, our hopes of bringing Nunez to the London Stadium could well be over. We had one really good chance to make it happen in January but quite simply didn’t do enough. That’s the bottom line.

How frustrating is that. David Moyes desperately needed to bring a top-class striker to the London Stadium in January. And had the board adequately backed him at the start of last month’s transfer window, Darwin Nunez would most probably be a West Ham United player now.
