Chelsea have entered the race to sign alleged West Ham target Sam Johnstone ahead of the summer transfer window.

That’s according to claims from Chelsea insider Si Phillips.

Hammers boss David Moyes wants to bring the 28-year-old West Brom goalkeeper to the London Stadium in the summer according to the likes of The Telegraph and club insiders Claret & Hugh.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel allegedly wants to bolster his goalkeeping ranks at Stamford Bridge as well with Kepa Arrizabalaga facing an uncertain future with the west London outfit.

And it appears as though Chelsea and West Ham could be set to go head-to-head for one player in particular in the summer transfer window…

West Ham face summer transfer window battle with Chelsea for West Brom star

Chelsea insider Si Phillips reckons that the Blues are eyeing a move to sign Sam Johnstone from the Baggies as a potential replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga, should the Spaniard end up leaving Stamford Bridge.

West Ham, meanwhile, are eyeing Johnstone to either be our number one or provide competition and backup for Alphonse Areola, should we sign the Frenchman on a permanent basis from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

Darren Randolph is set to be sold in the summer (Claret and Hugh) whilst Lukasz Fabianski probably only has one or two years left playing at the very highest level.

Johnstone would be a great addition for West Ham, as long as we keep Areola as well of course. He is out of contract at the Hawthorns in the summer as well, so will be available for absolutely nothing.

Chelsea’s apparent interest in the stopper will undoubtedly prove to be an issue for the Hammers though.

The 28-year-old has been described as a ‘brilliant’ player by West Brom News.

And they’re not wrong.

Standing at 6ft 4in tall, the West Brom stopper cuts an imposing figure. He is dominant in the air and a great shot stopper. The Baggies ace is a very impressive communicator as well.

Johnstone has conceded 412 goals in 355 career games and has kept 112 clean sheets in the process (Transfemarkt).

Considering the fact that he’ll be available on a free transfer in the summer, signing him seems like an absolute no-brainer for West Ham United.

Chelsea will clearly have a lot to say in the race for Johnstone’s signature in the summer, however.
