West Ham United target Memphis Depay is allegedly ‘likely’ to join Chelsea from Barcelona in the January transfer window.

That’s according to a report from Spanish publication AS who claim that Chelsea are chasing the Dutchman’s signature.

West Ham boss David Moyes wanted to bring the 28-year-old Barcelona forward to the London Stadium in the summer transfer window, according to Fabrizio Romano.

It was suggested that Depay’s lawyers were trying to reach an agreement with Barca in the summer to allow him to leave the Camp Nou on a free transfer.

That didn’t happen in the end, and the Spanish giants are now looking for a fee of around €5 million (£4.3 million) for Depay (AS).

That would represent a real bargain for West Ham, but it seems as though Chelsea could be a real problem for us…

West Ham face Chelsea competition for Memphis Depay in January transfer window

AS claim that the Blues are a ‘likely’ option for the 81-capped Holland international in January.

Graham Potter is keen to add another forward to his ranks at Stamford Bridge and Depay would be a very reasonably priced option.

It will be such a shame if the Hammers miss out on the former Manchester United man, he really is an exceptional talent.

Depay bagged 13 goals and two assists in 38 games for Barca last season (Transfermarkt).

The Dutch ace is an enigmatic, precocious talent and on his day he is unplayable. Depay is incredibly strong as well and would be ideally suited to leading the line on his own for the Hammers.

The Barcelona attacker has been described as a player with ‘unreal skill’ by The Metro.

Sure, he has displayed some attitude problems in the past but a fresh start at a new club might just be exactly what he needs to help him rediscover his best form.

West Ham signing Memphis Depay for around £4.3 million would represent brilliant business for the club, but Chelsea are seemingly ready to ruin our January transfer window plans.

Barcelona’s reported asking price for the 28-year-old is definitely good news for the Hammers but the Blues’ alleged interest in signing him certainly is not.
