There’s been a big sudden twist in a rumoured January deal on the cards between Chelsea and West Ham for Ian Maatsen.
Former Chelsea bit-part player Emerson Palmieri has emerged as one of West Ham’s best players – and signings – for years.
But there is no hiding the fact West Ham have zero depth beyond Emerson with Aaron Cresswell long past his best and looking likely to leave.
The fact Chelsea – when all fully fit – are so spoilt for choice when it comes to left-backs did not go unnoticed by Hammers boss David Moyes and technical director Tim Steidten during the summer transfer window.
At the time journalists such as Jacob Steinberg claimed West Ham were confident of getting a deal done with Chelsea for Ian Maatsen.

Sudden twist in rumoured January deal
But the young Dutch left-back remained at Chelsea who, like West Ham, must now move players on to help satisfy FFP rules and make space for new arrivals. The best way to maximise profit in that regard is to sell academy players – like Maatsen.
In a recent interview with AD, Maatsen recently stated he finds it difficult to accept his lack of game time at Chelsea.
On Christmas Day, GiveMeSport claimed West Ham believe they have a good chance of signing Maatsen from Chelsea in the January transfer window.
Now there’s been a big sudden twist in the rumoured January deal between Chelsea and West Ham for Maatsen.

Hammers no-go for Maatsen
According to Voetbal International, Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund are already in negotiations with Chelsea over a transfer fee.
And the report states Maatsen is open to the move.
TNT Sports and The Sun are also reporting the news and claim Maatsen now looks set to sign for Dortmund.
It kills West Ham’s hopes dead in the water. And it’s a real shame because he ticks every box of the club’s recruitment philosophy under Steidten.
Maatsen is not the only Chelsea player West Ham have been interested in but look set to miss out on.
West Ham may have a contingency plan, though. Because the Hammers are being heavily linked with a right-back who can also play just as well at left-back.
