Rangers could be set to miss out on bringing Sam Johnstone to Ibrox with West Ham allegedly in advanced talks to sign the West Brom goalkeeper in the summer transfer window.
TEAMtalk recently reported that Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst wants to bring the 28-year-old stopper to Ibrox on a free transfer.
With Rangers stopper Alan McGregor on the wrong side of 40, strengthening in the goalkeeping department will be one of Van Bronckhorst’s main priorities this summer.
The Gers could have a real battle on their hands though, in the race for Sam Johnstone’s signature.
The fact that he will be available on a free transfer at the end of the season means that he’ll very much be hot property in the summer.
And West Ham allegedly may well have a huge say in where the three-capped England international plies his trade next season…
Rangers face summer transfer window battle with West Ham
If the Glasgow giants do indeed manage to sign Johnstone it would be an incredibly good addition for them.
It certainly won’t be simple for Rangers to make that happen though…
The Sun claims that West Ham boss David Moyes is leading the race to sign the 28-year-old Baggies goalkeeper. In fact, it is alleged that a deal for the Hammers to bring Johnstone to the London Stadium is ‘a long way down the line’.
So if the Sun are to be believed, Rangers may well have no chance of signing Johnstone in the summer transfer window.
Missing out on the West Brom stopper would be a big blow to the Scottish Premiership giants. The chance to sign a proven international player in an area they desperately need to bolster for absolutely nothing would have been one that Van Bronckhorst would not have wanted to pass up on.
The 28-year-old has been described as a ‘brilliant’ player by West Brom News. And he will be a very useful addition for whichever club wins the race for his signature in the summer transfer window.
Standing at 6ft 4in tall, the West Brom stopper cuts an imposing figure. He is dominant in the air and a great shot stopper. The Baggies ace is a very impressive communicator as well.
Johnstone has conceded 412 goals in 355 career games and has kept 112 clean sheets in the process (Transfemarkt).
The West Brom ace probably has at least another decade left playing at the very highest level. He would be a fine addition for either the Gers or the Hammers.
It seems as though Rangers may end up second best to West Ham in the battle for the 28-year-old’s signature though.
