31-year-old West Ham transfer target is reportedly set to leave Tottenham Hotspur to join Atletico Madrid on loan.

That’s according to Sky Sports who claim that Matt Doherty is set to leave Tottenham to join Atleti on loan until the end of the season, but the Spaniards do not have an option to buy him.

In fact, West Ham actually made an approach to sign Doherty on transfer deadline day in the summer.

Sky Sports claims that the Irishman is Madrid bound, with a loan move to Atleti on the cards for him.

So it’s back to the drawing board for the Hammers.

Doherty joined Tottenham from Wolves for around £15 million in the summer of 2020 (Evening Standard).

The 29-capped Republic of Ireland international has fallen down the pecking order at Spurs, however, since Antonio Conte took over from Nuno Espirito Santo at the end of 2021.

Doherty excels when playing in the right wing-back role, and would have been the ideal player to operate in that particular role for the Hammers.

I actually think Doherty would have been a decent signing for West Ham, especially on a loan deal to plug a gap for the rest of the season.

Moyes really needs to be targeting younger and more hungry players than the Irishman. Having said that, on a short-term option, I think that he could have actually excelled at the London Stadium.

It’s a moot point now though, with the West Ham transfer target thought to be Atletico Madrid bound.
