Paul Merson’s Mateo Kovacic claim emphasises blueprint for success for West Ham vs Chelsea

Paul Merson highlighted a potentially huge boost for West Ham ahead of their clash with Chelsea this evening, when speaking on Gillette Soccer Saturday (Saturday, April 24th, 1:10pm).

The Hammers welcome the Blues to the London Stadium this evening for what is an absolutely huge game for both sides.

Chelsea currently occupy fourth spot in the Premier League table. West Ham are level on points with their London rivals, however.

David Moyes has worked wonders since taking over the Hammers for the second time in December 2019.

A win today for West Ham would see us climb back into fourth spot in the table with just five games remaining.

Paul Merson highlights how important Mateo Kovacic is to Chelsea

The Croatia international, 26, will miss today’s game against the Hammers through injury.

Kovacic, who earns £100k-a-week (Spotrac) hasn’t played since the Blues’ 4-1 win over Crystal Palace on April 10th.

And the West Ham players should take note of Paul Merson’s comments on Kovacic and use them as the blueprint for success against Chelsea:

“That’s the way you can beat Chelsea (suffocating them). Tuchel will be thinking, ‘I need to get Kovacic in the team’. Because Kovacic can beat the squeeze, he just glides around people. I just think they are a little bit predictable.”

If West Ham come out the blocks fast against Chelsea this evening, we will have every chance of beating them.

The Hammers need to hustle and hound the Chelsea defenders. As Merson said, we need to suffocate them like Brighton did at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

And with Kovacic unavailable for selection according to Thomas Tuchel, West Ham might just have a great chance of taking what would be three massive points from the contest.
