What West Ham fans did to goad Gent was absolutely priceless during a romp to another European semi-final.

West Ham really are massive everywhere they go as the Hammers secured their place in the Europa Conference League semi-finals.

With the game delicately poised at 1-1 after the first leg in Belgium, David Moyes’ side got off to the worst possible start by going 1-0 down against Gent at the London Stadium.

But West Ham levelled before half-time through a Michail Antonio header to set up what proved to be a breathtaking second half.

A penalty from Lucas Paqueta, an amazing solo run and finish from captain fantastic Declan Rice and a belter from Antonio secured a 5-2 aggregate victory.

And it also set up a semi-final against Dutch side AZ Alkmaar after they saw off Anderlecht on penalties in the other tie.

The Hammers and mighty Manchester City are now the only remaining English teams in European competition.

It means West Ham have made it to the semi-finals of European competition for the second consecutive season.

It was another European night that will live long in the memory for West Ham fans.

Not only for the superb goals, another fightback and the giant cardboard airplanes and elastic bands that flew through the air with the bubbles.

But for the brilliant retort from Hammers fans that sums up our unbeatable cockney wit.

When they had taken the lead, Gent’s lively and full away section turned on their mobile phone torch lights in unison as they sung their team’s song.

The rather lame showing of synchronised terrace behaviour drew mocking wolf whistles from West Ham fans.

But the Hammers would soon turn the tables on the visitors.

As West Ham came from behind to lead, the home fans – as if of one mind – reached for their phones and goaded the Gent supporters by turning on their torch lights as 60,000 were waved in the other direction with glee.

It takes a brave bunch of fans to try and make fun of the Hammers faithful.

Fair play to Gent, they travelled in numbers. But West Ham had the last laugh on and off the pitch.
