West Ham United winger Crysencio Summerville is now an international footballer.

The West Ham United star was rewarded for his purple patch in form between mid-January and early March with a surprise call-up to the Netherlands squad for the World Cup.

DISCUSS: Keeping Adama Traore is a bad idea 😡

He's done nothing!

Up until a few days ago, the former Leeds star had never played for his country. The 24-year-old, however, did make his debut for his country against Algeria.

Sadly, Summerville was criticised for his Netherlands debut, although the player himself is just happy to be involved.

Summerville pleased with Netherlands debut

The West Ham star, who is expected to leave the club this summer following their relegation from the Premier League, was speaking to Voetbal International.

He said: “I felt a healthy dose of nerves and, above all, was really looking forward to it. I tried to show what I could do.

“My starting point is always the same: I want to be free in my mind and in my game, so that I can create things on the pitch. Experienced guys like Virgil [Van Dijk] and Frenkie [De Jong] told me that beforehand too, that I just needed to be free. And that I was called up to the national team for a reason.

“That did me good. Of course, I have mixed feelings because of the defeat against Algeria. But personally, I am very happy and grateful to be in the World Cup squad and to have been able to make my debut.’

West Ham will no doubt hope that Summerville raises his market value at the World Cup this summer.

It remains to be seen just how involved he is. The Irons star has some tough competition for places, but perhaps he can impress as an impact substitute.

West Ham have obviously lost the luxury of negotiating from a position of strength following their relegation.

That obviously doesn’t mean the club will sell him cheaply but the premium they could put on his shoulders is almost certainly gone now.

As such, Summerville impressing at the World Cup and duly attracting more potential bidders is perhaps the only way in which the club can spark something of a bidding war.

Indeed, Summerville is attracting plenty of transfer interest ahead of the World Cup and the one hope that the Hammers have of banking huge money is that he lights up the grandest stage of them all.
